Conna History Books for sale

In 1990, Conna History Committee – a sub-committee of Conna Community Council – was formed to raise the awareness of Conna’s rich heritage and to record local history events, making them accessible to young and old alike. The History Committee has succeeded in achieving this goal and the constant stream of books produced since its inception is proof of this. Conna district is a small rural community in North East Cork but it is steeped in history and tradition with a wealth of folklore. Its castles, church ruins, old burial grounds and other ancient sites and monuments are a clear indication of all this. With links to such major historical figures as Cromwell and Sir Walter Raleigh, the events that took place in Conna down through the centuries are a microcosm of what happened in Ireland as a whole. The following are some of the publications of Conna History Committee:

Conna Parish DeaIMG_8553th Records  (2005)

Graveyard inscriptions usually contain much valuable information for genealogists and family researchers. With this in mind, Conna History Committee decided to record the inscriptions in all the parish cemeteries. This was completed, with the exception of Ballynoe Graveyard, which has already been recorded in book form. When this was done it was decided to seek additional ways of compiling a more complete death record of the parish. This was achieved by utilising cemetery caretakers’ books, newspaper death notices and death registration records. For good measure it was decided to include the Religious Census of 1766 and the Tithe Proctor’s Book of 1804, which makes for interesting reading. The paperback book consists of 315 pages with plans, indexes and photos.
